Honorable Mention Midwinter in the Palm House Christopher T George Outside it's snowing: a lone robin grubs for millet seeds on the cement walk. Inside, steamy banana fronds stretch toward roof, platforms for monkeys that chatter overhead. Water sparkles eye-like in a bromeliad; a fly buzzes trapped in a pitcher plant. We explore musty moss and fern forest, find hidden grottoes of catleya orchids throated with speckled saffron. Snow melts on glass above us, but inside, it is eternal summer. My hand caresses yours; your wandering thumb traces hieroglyphs on my hot and humid skin.
